Kylie Wilcox, Web Specialist, is our newest addition to the SunCatcher family. A recent graduate of Appalachian State University’s Renewable Energy Technology program, Kylie works on keeping the website updated alongside various other digital tasks. With years of experience on farms with organic produce and CEA (controlled environment agriculture) technology, Kylie enjoys being a part of the technological side of sustainable agriculture.
Dr. Christoffel den Biggelaar was born and raised in the Netherlands, where he received an Agricultural Engineer’s degree in Crop & Soil Sciences from the Hogere Agrarische School in ‘s Hertogenbosch. He worked as an agriculture teacher and extension agronomist/trainer in Burkina Faso, Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic before going to graduate school at Michigan State University obtaining a M.S. in Agricultural and Extension Education with a certificate in African Studies (1989) and a Ph.D. in Forestry (1994). He joined the Sustainable Development faculty at Appalachian State University in August 2000, teaching courses in sustainable development, and lecture/lab courses in agroecology and agroforestry. Between 2005 and 2024, he was a consultant for ecoagriculture and [agro]forestry for the Madagascar Fauna & Flora Group in Madagascar. He started collaborating with Dr. Carroll in 2004, and focused on passive solar adaptations and modifications to traditional hoophouses on the SD Teaching & Research Farm. Dr. den Biggelaar served as the editor of the present book, made most of the graphic illustrations as well as authoring some chapters.
Parker Grissom, Sales Associate, brings a wealth of experience helping customers bring sustainable solutions to their every day problems. Whether with solar energy, personal health goals, or small scale passive solar, Parker is the man for the job. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the SunCatcher team as we launch our line of personal, small footprint products!
Shannon Carroll, Gardener and Administrative Assistant, has 30+ years of experience providing leadership and support for instructional technology in the K-12 arena as well as providing technical assistance, recording keeping, and gardening support for SunCatcher. She retired from Watauga County Schools in 2013 and is currently dividing her time between working as the Finance Coordinator of Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture which operates the High Country Food Hub, volunteering with Lettuce Learn at Parkway School and helping with SunCatcher website updates, office management, communications and testing of the SunCatcher Jr. prototype.
Andrew Harrell, Greenhouse & Landscape Designer, is applying passive solar principles to draft SunCatcher construction plans. Harrell plays a vital role in serving as a CAD (computer-aided design) specialist to document and implement the designs for the full-size greenhouses. Beyond SunCatcher, Andrew is a landscape architect with a background in stormwater engineering focused on edible landscaping, sustainable landscapes, and computational design. He is also a hobby gardener on his small urban plot in Durham, North Carolina.
He can help you find the optimal location for your greenhouse, connect you with the best size for your needs, generate custom full-size designs, and plan landscape recommendations around your SunCatcher and property.
Joshua Carroll, Director of Strategy and Digital, has a decade of experience envisioning, building, and managing products and working with data for companies like Microsoft and Starbucks. Joshua has been involved in various roles with SunCatcher for the last fifteen years. His current focus is bringing the SunCatcher strategy to market from his home in Washington, DC, as well as running all things digital at SunCatcher. In his free time, he enjoys electronic music, plays with fire, and organizes transformational festivals, arts and activist gatherings.
Dr. Terry Carroll, physicist, founder, principal designer and CEO, has been involved with solar energy research and design for nearly four decades and holds advanced degrees in physics and science education. In addition to his energy auditor certification and teaching, Carroll worked as a residential energy consultant, doing both active and passive solar design and installation for Solar Works, Inc., in Mt. Airy from 1981 to 1986. From 1983 to 2009, Carroll taught physics, sustainable development, environmental studies and passive solar greenhouse courses at Appalachian State University in Boone. Dr. Carroll retired from ASU’s Biology Department in 2009 to devote himself full time to the development of SunCatcher.
